What is Pilates?

Pronounced (pi-LAH-teez), this unique body conditioning system was developed by Joseph Pilates and brought to America in the 1920’s. Pilates exercises are performed in a flowing, controlled manner, combining gradual movements with methodical breathing. Aspiring for precision with correct form, each movement is methodically thought out and extremely effective. Equivalent periods of relaxation and exertion provide a perfect balance for strengthening and stretching muscles and the spine while significantly improving bone mass.

Pilates is not your typical exercise class. It is an effective workout that helps improve flexibility and build muscle – without adding bulk. Pilates focuses on flexibility and strength training, creating long and lean muscles. Whether you have an injury or looking to improve muscle tone and challenge your workout, Pilates is for every body! Our focus is on form and quality rather than quantity or repetition.

Students will experience improvement in posture, flexibility, and balance. With dedicated practice, students will notice dramatic body transformations.

The aging population is seeing the long term benefits of Pilates. This functional exercise focuses on muscle strength in maximum range of motion to prevent injuries, thus having a long and vital life!

Pregnant women are also perfectly safe doing Pilates throughout pregnancy. Pilates is an excellent tool for learning proper alignment and posture while toning and strengthening. The body stays toned and fit during pregnancy, is prepared for childbirth, and is poised for quick recovery of stomach and pelvic floor muscles after the baby is born.

Men are now catching on to the diverse benefits of Pilates. They recognize they are strong but “tight” and must balance their musculature by increasing flexibility. Men often over-train superficial muscles at the expense of joint-stabilizing and core-supporting muscles, and in contrast, Pilates will have them work muscles that they didn’t even know they had. Athletic performance is improved, and a new sense of strength is achieved.

  • Pilates is taught one-on-one in 50 minute sessions with a Comprehensively Certified Pilates instructor. A typical Pilates private session consists of both apparatus and mat work as well as any specialized exercises to address your individual needs and goals. In this way the client gradually builds strength, control and balance before moving to more advanced exercises.

  • Pilates is not like any other exercise regimen you have ever done. The program is a unique and individual style of exercises performed on specially designed apparatus. Don't let the look of the apparatus scare you -- they are easy and safe to use with proper instruction from our highly trained Pilates instructors. There is an extensive repertoire of over 500 exercises -- and we promise you will never be bored working on apparatus like the Cadillac, Reformer, Wunda Chair, Barrels and more.

  • For your first pilates session, you should wear comfortable (yoga) clothing. On the equipment, you will want to have full range of motion for the exercises through your arms and legs- so make sure your clothing is not restrictive. We provide towels and water.
